We want to send you to NAWIC Annual Conference!

Each year, our chapter sets aside funds to cover Annual Conference registration fees for a handful of members. This previously was only available to members who had never attended an annual conference and were considered “First Timers”. This year, we are opening the opportunity to ALL NAWIC Salt Lake chapter members!  If you are interested in attending annual conference and would like to submit your name to be selected for this opportunity, please write ½ – 1 page about why you would like to attend annual conference and what you hope to gain and send it to me at president@nawicsaltlake.org by April 30th.  All submissions will be reviewed and voted on by the board and if you are selected, we will contact you to pay for your registration. Please keep in mind that our National bylaws (in Standing Rule 3 of the attached document) require anyone who receives chapter funds to attend a conference to write a report within 45 days. 47 views 0 commentsPost not marked as liked Recent Posts See All Bernhard Awarded for Safety Excellence 28 0Post not marked as liked Pentalon Construction Awarded for Safety Excellence 20 0Post not marked as liked Linda Kofford Receives Legacy of Excellence Award 19 0Post not marked as liked Comments Write a comment…

This year’s CAD Competition Awards Banquet was a HUGE success! We honored and awarded the two students who participated in this year’s competition, along with their friends, family, and school faculty. May Membership Meeting

For our chapter membership meeting this month, we held our inaugural “Can-struction” food drive! Attendees brought donation items for the Utah Food Bank, and were split into two teams by team captains, or “Project Managers”, Tonya Timothy and Jennifer Campbell. The team members were each allowed to select 5 items to build their project. The teams were given 15 minutes and 3 item exchanges, and were judged on creativity, style, and constructability. Team 1 built the “American Beauty Amphitheater”, complete with Creamy Peanut Butter presenting an acceptance speech. Team 2 built a multifamily complex complete with high and low income housing, a gym and pool, a dog park and grooming station, outdoor cafe, pedestrian bridges, and plenty of parking. And the winner was Team 1 for their impressive structure that stayed balanced even when faced with an “earthquake” (shaking the table). Congratulations Team 1!

NAWIC 69th Annual Conference

Each year, NAWIC holds a nationwide conference gathering members from all over the country to learn, network, and develop skills. This year, the 69th Annual Conference was held in Houston, TX on August 14-17th. The Salt Lake chapter had 12 members attend Annual Conference this year, and we are excited to share a few of their experiences: “I’m really pleased to have attended the NAWIC Annual Conference 2024 in Houston. It was a valuable opportunity to both learn from and network with many outstanding professionals in the industry. The Construction Documentation Training course by NEF was particularly excellent, and I would highly recommend it, especially for those who are just beginning their careers in construction. The job site tour of SH 99 Fort Bend County offered insightful perspectives on horizontal construction, which was especially interesting for me given my background in vertical construction. Additionally, visiting Dig World and operating various types of construction equipment was both enjoyable and informative. And, of course, the best part was the exceptional speakers. Their motivational and inspiring presentations truly left a lasting impression. I’m already looking forward to attending the 2025 NAWIC Conference in Boston.” –Puja Rao Kurupathi “Attending the NAWIC Annual Conference was an incredible experience that enriched both my personal and professional life. I had the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of women in the construction industry, each bringing unique perspectives and insights. The workshops and keynote sessions provided me with invaluable knowledge on the latest trends in the construction industry for women as well as some leadership strategies and solutions. I’m particularly glad I attended because it allowed me to strengthen my network, gain new skills, and feel empowered by the collective strength and determination of the NAWIC community. This experience has left me more inspired than ever to contribute to our chapter’s success and advocate for women in construction.   Attending the session “Why Can’t Everybody Just Get Along” with Cristine Cashen at the NAWIC Annual Conference was a highlight of the event for me. Cristine’s dynamic and engaging presentation style made the session both informative and entertaining. She provided practical strategies for improving communication, managing conflict, and fostering positive relationships in the workplace. The insights I gained from this session are incredibly valuable, not just in my professional interactions, but in all aspects of life.” -Jennifer Montague “I’m often the one encouraging others to stay positive or shift their mindset, but if I’m honest, I’m really hard on myself, both in my personal life and work. I’ve been told by others and have read books or listened to podcasts about changing my habits, but it’s tough! The keynote speaker at the conference really struck a chord with me. The way she speaks to herself resonated deeply. It made me realize how can I expect others to be positive or to think differently when I’m not practicing what I preach? She offered tools that can help me start making that change. I’m so glad I attended the conference for so many reasons. Our chapter has been nothing but accepting and welcoming, and getting to know everyone on a more personal level—more than just an hour once a month—has really deepened my appreciation for them. I learned so much from the incredible women I met at the conference. It’s amazing to see so many women in one space, filled with passion, excitement, acceptance, and love. Experiences like this don’t happen often.” -Marti Deveraux “Attending the NAWIC Conference 2024 in Houston, TX, was immensely valuable, particularly through Christine Cashen’s keynote, “Why Can’t Everyone Just Get Along?” Her session on improving communication in confrontational workplace and personal situations was profoundly impactful. Christine’s live demonstration, where one person tried to open a closed fist, vividly illustrated how resistance and defensiveness hinder effective collaboration. Her emphasis on shifting our language from accusatory “you” statements to inclusive “I” statements is crucial in fostering a more cooperative and understanding work environment. This approach not only enhances individual interactions but also strengthens overall team dynamics, making it a key takeaway for anyone aiming to improve workplace harmony and productivity. I am glad our company attended because it provided important insights into enhancing workplace communication and conflict resolution. The conference not only broadened our understanding of these essential skills but also connected you with others who share your commitment to improving the professional environment, making it a worthwhile and enriching experience. I am looking forward to the NAWIC Conference in Boston, MA 2025!!“ -Dawn Mason Annual Conference is always an amazing experience, and we can’t wait for the 70th Annual Conference in 2025 in Boston! 19 views 0 comments1 like. Casie Coggins Recognized as Women in Construction Champion

The Women in Construction Champion award honors an individual who is a champion for women in the construction industry. The honoree displays the following characteristics: Nominations were submitted and voted on by the NAWIC Salt Lake Chapter board. We are honored to present this award to Casie Coggins! Casie Coggins Process Manager at KIER Construction 2023-2024 Women in Construction Champion Award Recipient Casie has been with KIER Construction for over 6 years, and has mentored many women during her time there. Some of the things said about Casie are: “She is patient, and humble, and loving in her approach to teaching, training, and mentorship. She has always gone above and beyond what is asked of her.” “She has built teams that have fiercely dominated in their respective roles, while protecting each other, keeping accountability, and relying on each other’s strengths to lift each individual and team alike. Her ability to see and foster unique talents in her teams leads to team members that believe in themselves in a way that propels them to heights they did not believe achievable.” “She has been, and always will be, our biggest cheerleader. Her desire to advance the narrative surrounding women in construction has led to measurable impacts, within her company and the community, as she believes we all have a seat at the table, and is the first one to pull out the chair. She continues to push me to be better, to become more, and to keep growing in my professional and personal goals.” “I have known Casie for years now. During that time, she has acted as a second mother, as a friend, and certainly as a mentor. In the last year, Casie has been the one to help me fall in love with the construction industry. She has been the one who has encouraged me to take the next steps in advancing my construction management career. I have looked to her on countless occasions whether it’s for advice in my personal life or if I’m searching for answers within my profession. I would describe Casie as driven, a problem-solver, and some may even say “the knower of all”. I have watched her grow as professional and as a mentor for the last several years. Never once have I ever seen her grow impatient or remotely consider giving up. She is always looking for new ways to grow as a person and new ways to improve her teams. Casie once said, “All my ladies have gone on to do bigger and better things, and that makes me so proud.” Personally, I believe that it was the person who trained them that deserves part of that credit.”  – Aubry O’Neil (current team member) “I cannot thank her enough for being such a wonderful mentor to me. Casie is the most deserving person of this award by far! She inspires others, happily mentors everyone, and puts her whole self into whatever it is that she’s doing. Casie is resilient and strong willed, yet eager to compromise through team collaboration. Casie’s guidance and support have been instrumental in helping me achieve so much personal and professional growth. Because of her leadership and her exceptional abilities to make people believe in themselves, I am now far beyond excelling in my construction career! Casie, I want you to know that I proudly carry what you have taught me throughout my career, and in my daily life, too.”  – Veda Eggleston (former team member) NAWIC Salt Lake Chapter awards for 2023-2024 were presented at this year’s Installation and Awards Ceremony on September 20th. Join us in congratulating Casie Coggins for her recognition as a Champion for women in the construction industry! 283 views 0 comments1 like.
